Oliver’s Fish and Chips Highlights of 2020

As a small family business we have had, and still are, going through some tough times, however, for the short period of time we have had the restaurant open during 2020 we have received immense support from our customers. They have adapted so well to the new safety measures in place and during the months we have been open we would just like to say a huge thank you and we look forward to welcoming you all back some time this year (2021), once it is safe to do so. So let’s see what has been happening in the Takeaway here at Oliver’s during 2020 …..

December 2020 – 50 x Cod & Chips anyone/ Radio BBC Tees??

COMMUNITY SPIRIT LADIES OF STEEL:

Helen (Oliver’s Mama) was joined by Chris from Ladies of Steel to speak to Amy from BBC Tees regarding the donation which was made, it was lovely to speak to Amy and share the story with her audience.

“As mentioned on BBC Tees this morning we have been working with Oliver’s Fish & Chip Takeaway in Redcar. Oliver's approached us with the offer of fish and chips for the pensioners and vulnerable in Dormanstown and we delivered 50 portions. They also approached us and asked if we knew any families who'd been really impacted during the coronavirus pandemic. We sat as a group and nominated 2 local families who we knew had been greatly impacted and due to these impacts they'd be struggling this festive period. Oliver's kindly donated a pack to each of these families inside was a voucher for a fish and chip feast which includes family fish and chips, onion rings, chicken nuggets, scampi, fish bites, drinks etc Included in each pack was also a Tesco voucher for £150 to help the families with their shopping needs over the festive period. They also gave us some vouchers for couples fish & chips as well to give out in the community. We at the Ladies of Steel want to say a huge thank you to Helen, husband Michael and all at Oliver's.”

December – also brought some fun and excitement to our social media pages

We reintroduced our delicious ‘Pigs in Blanket’ back on the Takeaway menu, these go down a storm during December and we have decided to continue with them into January 2021. They are truly delicious and go fantastic with our chips and warm gravy.

12 days till Christmas campaign:

We launched this campaign in the run-up to Christmas and customers won a selection of prizes and interacted well with our posts. Well done to everyone who took part and also won their prizes, most were claimed in between Christmas and New Year which was lovely to see and the Family Feast meals went down a treat!

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen has welcomed the Government’s backing for Net Zero Teesside, the UK’s ground-breaking carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) project, following the announcement of £200 million of new funding to create two carbon capture clusters by the mid-2020s, with another two set to be created by 2030.

“What are your thoughts on the recent announcement today from Ben Houchen? Did you catch Michael (Oliver's Papa) on ITV this evening at 6pm… if not, here is a quick snap shot of the interview! “

October 2020 – Oliver turned 9yrs of age (Picture Oliver 9ths Birthday) & Redcar Athletic FC

“HAPPY 9TH BIRTHDAY OLIVER
We took over the original business when Oliver was 10 weeks old, to say things were hard was an understatement! Taking on a new business and doing a full refurbishment on the restaurant within the first month was a task and a half however our little munchkin got us through Oliver is turning into one handsome, strong, rugby loving boy He is truly the backbone to our strength on a daily basis and adds laughter and tears of joy to our days (well most days!)
Keep being you Oliver we hope you have the best day!”

We also developed a new and exciting relationship with one of our local football teams – Redcar Athletic, they are based on Green Lane in Redcar just opposite the Redcar Rugby Club who we continue to sponsor.

September 2020 – National Fish & Chip Day (5th Sep) and Introducing Kirsty to the Restaurant crew

Thank you to everyone who visited us yesterday to celebrate National Fish and Chip Day 2020 We love to see appreciation for the nation's favourite dish, and work hard to prepare the best fish and chips on the North East coast every day.

“So we would like to introduce to you a new member of staff here at Oliver's Fish 'n' Chips. The lovely Kirsty joined us just as we came out of lockdown and reopened the Restaurant back in July 2020.

Kirsty has instantly made an impact on the team and has settled in straight away. Her main role as Kitchen Preparer is something which is second nature to Kirsty and she supports the team so well, and especially the fryers.

Thank you Kirsty for joining the crew, we are so pleased you have settled in so well.”

July & August 2020 – We had some fantastic weather/ awarded the Travels Choice Award (Via Tfip Advisor)

We were able to enjoy some fantastic days within these months, the restaurant was finally allowed to be open and we were back to some form of normality.  Customers adapted extremely well to the new measures in the restaurant and we managed to guide our customers in a safe and secure environment both inside and outside of both establishments – thank you, we are eternally grateful.

“We are so proud to announce that we have been awarded a Trip Advisor Travellers Choice Award for 2020! Every year Tripadvisor combs through the reviews and gives this award only to the best of the best – we are officially in the top 10% of restaurants WORLDWIDE! ”

July 2020 – Lovely reviews, Customers feeling safe when visiting us

– 5 star review (Courtesy oDay outf Trip Advisor) July 2020
Fantastic from walking in to walking out. First meal out in ages and felt so safe. Greeted at the door with hand sanitizer, temps check and then taken to our table. Food and service both brilliant, ordered large haddock, regular haddock and sausage and chips. There were 4 of us in the party but my son was just adjusting to his new brace so didn’t want to order. Not a problem, a spare plate was offered so he could just pick bits from ours!
Unbeknown to us but we had been served by the owner, and we have to say the place is a credit to you and the rest of your colleagues – Thank you!

June 2020 – a new member of the crew arrived, Emily had her little baby boy Lucas

CONGRATULATIONS

Congratulations to the lovely Emily Canning and her partner Ste on the birth of their beautiful little baby boy Lucas, born at the weekend. He is so cute and we cannot wait to meet him and have lots of cuddles, enjoy this special time Emily!
Love from Helen, Michael, Oliver and the Oliver's crew xxx

May/ June 2020 – Takeaway reopened

We took the decision to slowly reopen the Takeaway at the beginning of May, after being closed for 7 weeks after the first initial lockdown in March 2020 we decided the time was appropriate to reopen after investing in certain safety materials for both our staff and customers.  We did this slowly and reopen 3 days initially, and then we progressed with our opening times in line with how our staff felt and based on the customer’s needs.  We progressed to 7 days at the beginning of June and thankfully have been able to continue to stay open every day to this day.

We also started our own ‘Social Distancing Hero’ campaign to make people feel a little more at ease when visiting us, who doesn’t like a bit of Pokemon – we had to ask Oliver’s opinion about this one lol!

“We just wanted to say a huge thank you and well done to all of the Takeaway staff here at Oliver's who have, and are still, managing the new restrictions we have in place fantastically.
Our wonderful customers are behaving themselves as well! They are listening to the crew and their instructions where needed.
Sometimes there may be a wait in the queue especially on those sunny days but rest assured the team are working tirelessly to cook, prepare and box your food as quickly as possible!
Let's hear it for the wonderful Oliver's crew!”

– Facebook quote (May 2020)

We would also like to thank each and every one of our customers, you have adapted so well to the changes – please be assured we are doing all we can to ensure we keep you safe and most importantly our staff members and their families.
